Drunken SAS pilot stopped at a Swedish airport

An unannounced breath tests revealed that a pilot of a SAS plane was inebriated at work and was stopped from flying on Tuesday morning.

According Swedish tabloid news paper, Aftonbladet and Swedish Television the officer was in the outer security checkpoint when police asked him to blow. The test revealed that the pilot had more than 1.0 per mille of alcohol in the blood - far above the prescribed limit of 0.2 parts per thousand. According to SAS's own rules, pilots are also to be quite sober at least eight hours before they fly.

“We are aware of the situation and is concerned about what had happened. We’ll support the border police 100 percent,” says Rebecca Sodergren of SAS press office to Swedish television. Adding that at SAS, there is a zero tolerance with regard to such actions by their employees.

The officer is the first person to be hi by the new control method at the airport since a new law was introduced in 2009. It makes it legal for police to carry out unannounced alcohol tests on aircrews despite not having a reasonable suspicion of drink driving or flying a plane.
The pilot is now being investigated.
