Danish Meat producer Danish Crown lay off 500 in Esbjerg
Friday, 11 May 2012
The Danish corporate sector continues to suffer as meant producer,
Danish Crown closed its slaughterhouse in Esbjerg, which means firing
500 employees.
Danish Crown’s Anne Villemoes of its press department told Danish
business daily, Borsen that the slaughterhouse will be shut down
at the end of august. "The production will be moved to other places in
the country, primarily Sæby.
That is relatively far away from Esbjerg “but we will to everything
possible to help the sacked employees find a new job," said
Villemoes in a briefing at a meeting on Friday morning.
The company
said in a statement that the closure of the abattoir was due to alleged
overcapacity of pigs in the European market. "We have seen a slight
decline in the supply of pigs to our Danish market, and we are
responding to. It is a measure of accountability when we make tough
decisions like this, "says production director at Danish Crown Søren F.
Eriksen.
Supply of slaughter has gone down a few percent, while the closure is
aimed at investing in the capacity of a number of other Danish Crown
departments in Denmark. " It will mean approx. 300 new jobs elsewhere
in the country, but it is not yet clear how the new jobs will benefit
them, "says Søren F. Eriksen.
In previous closures, all employees will be covered by the Danish Crown's social plan, as well as the established job bank.
