ABB wins solar power orders worth $225 million to boost South Africa’s renewable program

ABB has won orders for solar power projects in South Africa to a value of $225 million dollars (about Skr1.49 billion).

According to a press release from the company, the order is for two photovoltaic plants in the vicinity of the town of Polokwane in Limpopo Province in northern South Africa, which will be completed in 2013.

The orders were awarded by two special purpose entities, Core Energy and Erika Energy, whose primary stakeholders include Sun Edison, a leading global solar energy services provider.

The large-scale photovoltaic plants is said by the company to generate enough clean energy to power around 36,000 homes and displace around 130,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

 “We have a strong relationship with ABB and are excited to be working with them on this project" said Pashupathy Gopalan, Sun Edison Vice President and Managing Director of South East Asia and Sub Saharan Operations, to the press release

 "ABB brings extensive experience and expertise to the table and we are pleased to be working with them to bring renewable energy to South Africa," he added.
